Solid cam for a 440?
« on: April 28, 2007 - 10:09:55 AM »

 :1zhelp: Just looking for suggestions...

I have a bracket 440 project I am putting parts together for and am considering a solid cam for the 440 I will be running.  Block is a '66, heads are '452 that have not been worked yet, but will not be too exotic due to the budget.  I assume flat top forged pistons will be used. Transmission is a 727.  The car will see little or no street time.

Thanks in advance.
Bill

I use the UltraDyne grinds in most cases , I reworked a Race engine last year ofr a friend , the engine made 270 RWHP on a dyno before i started , I cleaned up the porting on the heads , they had been started , & swapped the Comp grind for the ultradyne & went back to the dyno with no other changes & made 345 RWHP , [X1.6to get gross rated HP] the car went from 13.8 in the 1/4 to 12.0 .
I can get you grind #s tomorrow to match the exact powerband RPM range you want or you can contact Steveslavick@holley.com

That is a pretty good gain!   :grinyes:
I don't foreee much more work on the heads than bowl porting and gasket matching.  I'm not sure what heads are on this '66 engine.  I bought the 452s on a whim but am told they are good heads to use.

I'm guessing the power band will be in the 2000 to 6500 range.  Dare I say the project is a B-body  :misbehaving:

the 66 should have the 516 closed chamber heads which I actually prefer over the 452 , either way I would port them extensively for max gains , I will get you a cam grind # tomorrow when I get home
B bodys are Cool too  :2thumbs:

I'll pull a valve cover this weekend and check one out.  Would the 516 heads have large valves too?.
I looked for an UltraDyne website but only came up with some "Bullet cams" site.  Does the manufacture not have there own site?

I will stand by...

Thanks!

UlrtaDyne went out of business about 4 years ago But Harold who designed all the grinds now works at Holley as does Steve Slavik who used to work with UltraDyne so the grinds are still available Through Holley / Lunati If you know what to order
For best power between 2000-6500 I would order the -43799- TF60-TF60-08 grind , the specs are 251/251* duration @ .050, 278* duration advertised, .570/.570 lift with 1.5 rockers / .608 lift with 1.6 rockers , ground on a 108* CL
typically the 516 heads have smaller valves , but i always install hardened exhaust seats & 1.81 valves

 Ther customers 440 had a stock bottom end with Speed Pro L2295F Dome pistons & 906 heads , TTi headers , M1 intake , 850 carb , 727 trans
we are upgrading to a 1050 Dom & M! 4500 intake this season  & should see anoth 40+ HP gain
