I used to have 8.5 convo pros with 5 inch backspace and the tire just rested on the spring...but the tires were MT ET Streets 28*12.5*15's ... you should be ok!

Just to play it safe, I wouldn't go more than 4.5 inches in.

You should worry more about tread width of the tire.... no matter what rim width you use on a stock rear your probably only gonna get a 275/60/15 in there!!!

I know you can get a 10" wide wheel in there with up to 5" of back space, however, tire choice and section width of that tire becomes critical. I also know you can fit a 295/50 tire in there. Again, the section width is the sizing factor and wheel back space selection becomes critical. I don't know if you could fit a 295 on a 10" rim together in there. Logically it is possible, but it would probably require some odd back space dimension that is not offered off the shelf. A 9.5 width with up to 4.5 of back space would be no problem. You might be able to squeeze a 295 in there on that rim size. A 275 on an 8" rim fits without any trouble at all.

I have 295s on an 8" rim under my Challenger. They fit fine and look like an old trans am racer, but isn't the best combo of wheel and tire as I have to run the tires around 22-24 pounds of air to get full tread contact.

I had a 15x8.5 centerline Auto/Drag witha 4-7/8" back spacing. Had a 275-60R-15 on it with no rubbing ar jacking up anything.

I had 16x9s on my Chally w/5" BS.  They're currently on my B'Cuda.

However, I can only fit a 245-50 as any wider will go into the fender lip (plenty of room to the spring for bigger tire).

If I rolled the fender, I'm sure I could have gotten a 275-50.
