It sounds like you need to ream out the pilot bushing to fit the tranny input shaft to me.

You can wipe out your thrust bearing and cause other problems by forcing them in with bolts.  :eek7:

I agree.  If you test fit your tranny's input shaft into the flywheel before you put your clutch and bellhousing on, and it goes in okay, then you shouldn't need to pull it in with bolts.  Besides, those threads in the bellhousings pull out easily or strip.  I've had to repair quite a few holes in the housings with heli-coils, after I got them at swap meets.

I converted my camaro over to a muncie 4 speed a year ago and I had the same problem.  A friend of mine put both hands  on the axle tubes and put his foot on the tail shaft of the trans and pushed on it hard as he could while I was twisting/pushing the tranny in from the front.  Talk about a major p.i.t.a.  It took about 20 minutes of this persuasion before it went in that last inch. Needless to say I was  :faint: after that.

What I'm saying is that if he would have pushed the clutch pedal in, the trans would have gone in, in under 20 seconds.

:iagree: for swaps i agree that this should be checked first, i am just putting factory parts back in and alway have trouble getting that bugger in that last 1/2 to 1/4 inch, there have been a few that pose no issue, but after about 20 min of fighting, i decide that it is time to win.

For the last inch or so ,whether u have a helper or not hook up the clutch linkage and step on the pedal, the clutch will center itself and ull push it in with no problems, orf course ull have a couple of bolts in it............kim.....
