A couple Noob questions
« on: May 13, 2007 - 11:22:36 AM »
Hey guys. Just to show my inexperience with these cars, my last 2 cars were a '94 ford probe and a '94 grand am, so I have a couple of questions. To give you a basic run-down of my situation, a buddy of mine bought a '64 cuda with the 273 almost 2 years ago. The engine ran fine but burned oil. He bought a crate 318 for it and was just about to put it in and had to store the car cuz he got a job in another town. Since then he's wanted to get rid of it, new motor and all. He originally wanted $1700 for it, but now he said he'd give it to me for $500, he wants it gone that bad. It has all the original chrome but has been stripped and primed to be painted and is in good condition. All it needs to run is a wheel cylinder, fuel lines, and a radiator, and maybe a new clutch but the old one is still in decent condition. He said the parts minus the clutch would be another 200 bucks. He also promised he would help put in the new engine and paint the car (he paints private airplanes for a job, and cars for hobby). So my noob questions are:

1. Is this a good deal? $500 for the car and about $200 for parts (not counting a clutch)

2.Just making sure, does the 318 fit into the 64's?

3. Does the transmission from the '64 work on the 318?

4. Where can I find a price on various clutches that would fit the tranny? and maybe a parts number would be helpful too...

Thanks guys..

1.  Yes, Yes, and Yes  It is hard to get any car for $500.

2. The 273 and 318 are the same size block, so it should go in without any trouble.

3. Refer to #2

4. Not sure on the best place, but I would check with Summit, Jegs, etc.

Hope this helps

Hopefully you get it and update us with your project. It's not often that we see a car from the "toad years" around here!

Even the 67-69 cars don't show up on this board much.

ok and another question just to check my buddy's research on this.. he said it needs a wheel cylinder, the power steering lines, and a radiator.. and he said all that would be about 200 bucks, does that sound about right? and what about a ballpark figure on a clutch?

Wheel cylinders & P/S lines are low dollar items, the radiator could be re-cored for a couple of hundred but a new one will cost considerably more. If the car is otherwise complete I have no doubt that it is worth $500. or more, but if you think you will get away with spending $200. and be done....no way.  There will be plenty of little somethings that any vehicle of this age is going to need.  You have to approach vintage cars as a hobby not an investment.   :2cents:

If it`s a stock 318 just call any local auto parts for a price an the clutch setup.Even if you end up putting $500 or more into fixing it up it still sounds like a good deal.

Yea i know it'll prolly always be a work in progress, I just needed an estimate on what it would take to get it running. as for the interior, paint, etc.. that'll have to come later.

At $500, plus a minimal investment to get it running and driving, its well worth it.
