How to pop off the glove box lock
« on: March 26, 2005 - 09:02:05 PM »
I did a search in the forum and no hits.
How do you pop off the glove box lock ?
The chrome piece on the front of the glovebox that the key goes into?

you have toi remove the whole lock core which is why the chrome face is always broken off , you need to use a key or pick the lock into the locked position then using a paper clip you have to poke into a small window in the 6 Oclock positon & depress the lock retainer & pull th core out of the housing , this is obviously much easier to do if you have the key for the lock , or take it to a locksmith

excellent question but maybe too late for me. Mine isnt the locking type and doesnt use a key. I inserted a stiff wire into the lock hole and gently pulled. After some deliberation, it did come out but in pieces. I am guessing I will be looking for another lock assembly (to add to the list).  :banghead:

Be careful or the lock cylinder will come apart as mine did. I depressed the wrong tab, and pulled the lock out. The retaining ring pulled away from the lock housing. A 10 min. job turned into 2 hrs.

Put the key in and put the lock in the locked position.

Pull the key out.

This is the window at the 6 o'clock position. The tab in the center is not the one to depress.

Use a jewlers screwdriver and find the tab at the front of the cylinder, looking thru the window.

Angle the screwdriver and depress this tab. While holding the tab in, PUT THE KEY BACK IN.

If you depress the worng tab, the key will not go back in.

Once the key goes back in, you can stop depressing the tab, as the key holds it down. If you can, try to look inside the window to confirm that the front tab is down.

Pull the cylinder apart.

If you depress the wrong tab and pull it apart, the front retaining plate will pop off. That is what I did, and why I'm posting this information.

The tab on the right is the one that you depress. It will not depress with the key in. Screwdriver is pointing at the correct tab to depress.

The other tabs to the left depress when the key is in.

To reassemble the lock, Hold the front tab down and push in the key.

Push the lock back into the cylinder and remove the key.

What about non-keyed lock? Same push pin to release?
