Amp Gauges
« on: May 23, 2007 - 11:46:39 AM »
I have been reading up on the problems with the amp guages and have deceied to disconect mine and re-route the black wire from the Alt. straight to the starter relay.
I have been following the intrustions on the following web page.

My question is what size fuse do you put in the fusible links, or do the 14G / 16G fusible links already come with a set fuse which is sealed??

I'm confused  :swear:

Fusable links are a type of wire, they dont use a fuse.

Gichy - the AMP guage should be ok. Of course if you overload it it will burn out. It is possible to have your alternator put out more current than it is rated for which would do that damage. If the alternator rotor (rotating bit) has shorted windings it will produce more current but will get much hotter to the touch as well. That relates to a shorter alternator life.

Ive seen this happen on my 70 Challenger.
The car has had no modifications to the electrical system.
The only reason that I found this was an issue was that it left me stranded on the side of the road a few times.
The bulkhead connector melted on the black line coming off the alternator.

I'd HIGHLY suggest tightening these connections and sealing them with dielectric grease to help keep them clean!

So what makes the fusible link fail if their is no fuse?

Should these be stocked at nappa?

My firewall connector are burnt and melted, so I think there was an issue with the previos onwer
I should fix this now before I get stuck on the side of a raod.

Thanks

A fusible link is a piece of wire that is designed to fail if higher current passes through it.  They are not meant to be bypassed in such an easy fashion as a conventional fuse.

If you can't find a fuseable linkage locally, I know Year One carries them. Your melted firewall connector could have been from anything stupid the previous owner did. You might be worried about nothing here.  :dunno:
