More exhaust talk...
« on: May 29, 2007 - 08:53:31 PM »
I want to keep my original 2 bbl on my 383, but I was wondering what type of exhaust I should use.  I like the sound of glasspacks, its classic.  I was wondering though what size pipe to run, and if its easy to do a x or h pipe.

Basically, whatever works best with the 2 bbl.  (For the minimal performance gain I will get.   :roflsmiley: )

An x pipe will net you a higher peak hp.  An H pipe will give you more down low torque.  I would use the H pipe considering your car appears to be stock, and will probably not see much time over 5,000 RPM.  Does your motor have headers on it or manifolds?  If you have the manifolds I would probably run a 2 1/4" dual system, headers a 2 1/2".  Do you plan to dump the exhaust at the rear, or go all the way out the back?  A dumped exhaust has ALWAYS sounded better to me.  Tailpipes usually distort the sound of the muffler and give it a semi splatty sound under part throttle.  I put the new flowmaster super 40s on my 340 'Cuda and couldn't be happier with the sound.  It is very deep, and sounds amazing going down the road.  A regular 40 series muffler can not compare to these.  I had glasspacks on my D300 at one time, but over time they just burnt out and it was incredibly loud and raspy inside the truck.  My advice would be to get a fully welded muffler (stainless if possible) for a long life.  Hope this helps.

Thanks Andy.  I have the stock manifolds on yet, and plan on keeping them on there.  I also want it out the back.  When you say dump it, where?   ???

Thanks, any more feedback is appreciated.   :smokin:

When I think of dumped exhaust I think of cars that have a small piece of pipe maybe 4 inches long that is curved downward and is put directly on the muffler which "dumps" the exhaust just before the axle.  I was thinking about doing that but I couldn't hear myself think much less hear my tunes with the exhaust directly under the rear floor board. :faint:

Like So,

This is the setup I have on my 99 Camaro SS.  1 3/4" Jet Hot coated longtube headers, 2.5" exhaust with cutouts, x-pipe, and single chamber flowmaster race mufflers.  The mufflers are flowmaster part # 325108.  They sound amazing in the car but aren't too loud for my tastes, however, I'm only 22 right now though. :grinyes:  They are much deeper sounding than super 40s.  :naughty:
Here is a short incar video and a flyby going by the camera.

I slowly brought it up through the rpms to keep the sound there longer, lol.  With a cam these things are amazing.  I can't wait to put a cam in this car.  Here is a link to a friend of mines car that has a cam in it with the same exhaust setup.

"Dumped" exhaust will not usually pass a safety inspection!  :grinno:
