Steering Column Removal?
« on: May 28, 2007 - 02:33:55 PM »
How do I remove the steering column from within the Engine bay? I've pulled the interior and the dash and the steering column is all thats left, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Thanks

You have to drive out the drift pin in the coupler. And unbolt the column from the floor inside the car.

You will need a punch for that pin.  :stomp: I used one of my "not worthy" tie down's (T-shaped)from my valve covers. It worked like a charm... along with a hammer.

Is the steering column supposed to come loose when I pull the pin? I pulled the pin and nothing is happening. Am I missing something? :clueless:
Thanks for the responses

Once you pull that pin, you should be able to move the steering column at least a foot or so into the car. Maybe that big knuckle is still hung up on the steering box?? It might be hammer time.  :grinyes:

You may need some one pulling on the inside, at the same time as you hammer on it. But if you got the pin out, it will come out.  :2thumbs:

a BFH & some penetrating oil on the coupler/splines should do it if the pin is out

and I suppose you took the 3-bolts out at the firewall.  :clueless:

The penetrating oil worked like a charm. Thanks guys! Now when I look in my engine bay all I see is a K frame. I can't wait to see everything put back together completely restored!
