clutch/cone - what is the best
« on: June 11, 2007 - 07:45:58 PM »
Couple of questions on rear ends.

I need to upgrade mine.  I want to put in a sure grip for sure and probably 3.55s, but which is better, clutch or cone.  Also how does one tell the difference between the two?  I have attached a picture of one.

Appreciate the help.

:clueless:   This is a good question as I'm not up on this subject??  Chryco will most likely know!

3:55's I have in the hardtop and 3:23's is what I have in the convertible . . . hardtop is great for around town but if I want to cruise to a distant show, the 3.23's are great for the highway!  You want to do 100mph  . . lets go!!  Not sure about where you live but here where I'm at . . I travel I-96, a michigan freeway . . and although 96 is the name . . it's also usually the speed limit too!

MR291  - the picture is of a cone clutch sure grip. The disc clutch style will have a more cylindrical differential case with bolts running through it. You can rebuild a disc clutch diff but not a cone (well mopar muscle or mopar action showed it can be done but most people don't bother).

Here is a ebay ad showing a clutch disc type for reference

Both work well , the advantage to the clutch is it can be rebuilt , the cone is basically junk when it wears out , I agree with above the pic is a cone style

:aarg: After folowing the article in Mopar Muscle, the results were 100%. To do another one it would take me about 2 hours. That is a low cost cone clutch.
