Blocking Primer-Doors and Trunk Lid ?
« on: June 20, 2007 - 05:47:19 AM »
Bodyguys-
If you're going for a very straight look when blocking/guide coating the primer and filler coats before paint what do you need to do for the doors and trunk lid? Do you need the rubber door and lid seals in place for the proper finish height between the doors/quarters and the trunk lid/quarters? I guess this applies to the doors and front fenders also. I realize all panels and doors must be previously mounted and adjusted properly before this.

Basically I'm asking if your block across the panel gaps, do you need the rubber seals in place or how do you get it to finish heights?

Thanks, Wes

I am not a professional at anything but...

When I do bodywork I don't worry about the rubber seals until the last thing for three reasons. One, if your using primer as a build up when your blocking there is gonna be overspray all over the rubber even if you mask it.  Two, you still have to paint the jams color so you wouldn't do that until all the priming was done and three, the metal hinges and door strikers will overcome any seals that didn't seat correctly.

It's a good Idea to install the little square rubber bumpers on the doors and trunk lid temporarily for lining up and blocking but then remove them for final paint and reinstall them along with the seals as the very last thing
