440 problems
« on: June 20, 2007 - 06:31:03 PM »
I replaced the tranny in the charger (the newly rebuild one lasted almost a 1/2 mile). So I finally got to take it for a short run. The car idles great but when in gear the motor almost snubs out. When any throttle is applied the car chugs and feels like its missing. I was thinking carburetor (which is also newly rebuilt). With everything on the car new or rebuilt its hard to isolate problems in the car. It also could be something in the ignition system which is still points. I don't think dwell could be far enough off to cause this. Any thoughts would be great.
Thanks
Todd

I'd sure be inclined to go electronic ignition.
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

sounds like a torque converter problem , it has to be too tight & not letting the engine idle in gear

I had a little time today so I swapped the carb off my challenger onto the charger and I did the trick. The car runs perfect. I brought the carb back to the guy who rebuilt it and he said it sounded like the power valve was stuck so we will see.
Thanks for the advice guys. I was glad the carb was the problem because my next steps were to go though the ignition and pull the conveter and I was not looking forward to either.
