Coil writing, which is the right one?
« on: June 08, 2007 - 05:40:40 PM »
I see these and I also see Green writing on some of the coils. Which color writing on the coil goes to which engine and year? is the green writing one's original and the white is wrong?

I'm guessing either the green writing one's are for the earlier (71 on back) and the white is for 72 on up. Not sure though.

Check out the July 07 Musclecar Enthusiast if you can. Nice article on a 70 440-4 with many pics and commentary supplied by Frank Badalson - very detail oriented. The article has a few pics with an original coil (including one with the radio supressor) and it seems to have the greenish tint to the writing which is closer to the business end of the coil than the one in your picture. With our cars the devil definitely is in the details; i think yours looks fine

Thanks Russ,   :2thumbs:

I ask this because I am getting as many of the correct parts that were originally went with it. I recently was able to get the radio suppersion capacitor that goes with it. A rare part.

Anybody else know more about this? Everytime I go look at an original Hemi, the shaker blocks the view of the coil.

and I just found out it's correct for 71 also for all engines both years. p/n 2495531.

so the white lettered coil is a bogus reproduction then it looks like.

Coils were made by two manufactures, Essex and Prestolite.  Essex reproductions are available and are dead nuts to the original.  '66 to mid '68 were lettered differently than mid/late '68 to '71.  The coil that MP sells is a kluge of later style coil markings.  I carry the below pictured coils.  '68 - '71 top, '66 - '68 on bottom.

Thanks FYI for the photos. That explains it all. I'll go look up essex on search as I do want the correct look for my engine. I didn't see yet anyone offering the green writing ones on e-bay.

I looked up Essex and never found a website listing them.
