Thanks guys.  Another problem is though, not many trucks have 2wd up here.  Everything is a 4x4.  If anyone ever came across one, and would be willing to ship it, I'd be set!

Still wondering if the tranny pressure plate will bolt up to a Hemi flywheel though.   ::)

You may want to do a little home work on the torque capacity of that Dakota transmission -  Remember that the weight of your truck needs to be accounted for.  Your HEMI is rated at 345 HP, which is substantially more that what was put in the 2WD Dakota's.  I'd hate to see you get everything together and "pop" a tranny.

The Ford base Tremec uses a 6.00 long input shaft.  The input shaft just  about makes it to the centering bore that you will have on the end of your 5.7 Hemi crank.  I believe that Mopar or NAPA makes a retrofit roller pilot bearing that "Should" work for that transmission.  The retro roller bearing uses the torque converter pilot bore on the end of the crank.  Check your length of the input shaft - I would imagine the service manual at the dealerships may give some of this information.

It sounds like you are well on your way, since you bought your engine.  Just curious - How much did you have to give and what year?

Well, I dont really like talking financing, but its Ok I guess, it doesnt really hurt anyone.   :grinno:

It is an '04 with 40,000 miles on it.  Here's the bummer.  The guy said $1500 on the phone the two times that I called to make sure it was still there.  So I get there, get everything all set up, ready to load and pay for.  He then leans on his desk real casual/synical like and says, "So.... What are we going to do about this core charge?"

I was like, what do you mean core charge, you never said anything about a core.

He says, Well I usually say it every time on the phone.

I was like, Usually?  There's no way you said anything about it, I would have asked how much it was.

Needless to say, he didnt budge, he could tell I was pissed, big time.  I asked if he does that type of thing just to get people to come down, and he didnt reply, lol, what a jerk.  I think he did feel bad once I told him what I was doing with it, and I was doing it myself.  So he threw in the pedal sensor for nothing.  Woop-dee-doo.

So the core charge was $300.  Yikes.  But I drove over an hour there, and I wasnt going home without it.

5.7 Hemi-  $1800
Engine Comp-  $150

I was out of state, so no tax.  I did get the entire engine wiring harness too.  I might sell that and get the Street and Performance one though, sounds much simpler.

My truck will weigh when done with me in it approx. 3800 lbs, about the same or less than a Dakota, depending on model.  There isnt anything to it really, just a frame and a tin box, lol.

So... If I get a tranny, and the input shaft is too long, could I not just get that retro pilot bearing, and cut the shaft off?  What would that hurt?

Oh, and I've seen more powerful things in Dakota's before, this one I saw a few months ago.   :icon16:

Nice Score - In selecting the transmission, the input shaft pilot could be cut off, you need to look at the spline on the input shaft as to where it starts and stops to make sure you have enough spline engagement on the disc.  The retro pilot bearing should work fine,  I can see why it wouldn't.  Keep us posted.

By the way - Cool pictures of that Dakota.

So, what do I tell them I want at Mopar or Napa for the pilot bearing?  The guys here at Napa I dont care for, they dont know much.  And at the dealer, they just look on a computer.  Thanks Tony.   :2thumbs:

I would imagine that you will need to now the model and year of the transmission, because who knows what changes from year to year / month to month.  Measure the input shaft diameter for verification and slide the pilot bearing on when you get it.  The other alternative is the use a Timkin cross reference bearing and make a bronze spacer to fit into the end of the crank.  Or better yet machine a brass pilot bearing and forget the roller all together.  (Cheaper yet) Make sure that you verify the bell housing fits the HEMI before you do anything though.

Sure, I was going to guess something like that.  Even down at the John Deere dealer 3 miles away, they do spec searches, searches like every bearing imagineable.  (I live on a farm, know those guys well, they wont steer me wrong)

I know a few local machinits that will help out if I need a spacer.

I've heard from a few different people that the 3.9 has the same bolt pattern.  I'll try and find one out of a half or 3/4 ton first, the dakota one would be a last resort.  Thanks again Tony, I'm pretty sure I got things figured out.  Now comes the spending.   :money: :roflsmiley:

Keisler has a 6 speed kit for the 5.7/6.1 Im sure it can be fit into an E-body with a little effort. If not, I know the 5-speed will.

70 cuda, 440, KB pistons, 10.5:1 compression, edlebrock heads,RacerBrown cam, 5-Speed Tremec, Megasquirt EFI
