Sandblaster Project (with pics)
« on: July 15, 2007 - 06:04:12 PM »
I went down this morning all happy to sandblast my parts today, however when I started sandblasting it was HELL.  I had to keep moving the sand over the end of the hose (which sucks up the sand), I couldn't see in there cause the lighting and plexy glass are shot, and I had more sand in my hair from the sealing being so bad then in the cabinet.  So I said screw it, I put it in the trunk of my 1993 Spirit and drove home.

Here is some pictures of it all ripped down, now I have a few questions for guys who have built them:

1.  The cabinet is not a large cabinet at all, however my main problem is the shape of the bottom.  Then sand doesn't collect into one area, it collects all across the bottom.  So what I was thinking on doing was:

     A.  Cutting the bottom out and rewelding in new pieces that be steep enough in order for the sand to collect in a smaller area

or

     B.  Just weld in steeper pieces on top of the already created sides (if that makes sense).  The problem with this is that I will be cutting down my ability to hold a lot of sand.

2.  Do you see all the bolts holding the unit together, should I just weld the thing together?  Would that be a better setup?  It leaks sand through these sides because they really aren't sealed that well.

3.  What is your light setup?  I want the brightest setup possible cause I cannot see in that thing for the life of me.

4.  Do you hook up a shop vac to your sandblaster and let it run?

Thanks guys.

:dunno: That would require a petite babe to fit in there, but she could just stand beside it just fine. Somehow ambitions your post got to where you were looking and got all worked up and then when your wife walked into the room you "accidently" made a post about you blasting cabinet, which by the way is looking great.  :smilielol: Is that what happened?   :roflsmiley:

I'm probably the last one that needs to respond but seeins how I have rigged my own homemade cabinet up & had a some of the same issues.
1. add a piece to create a slope to collect the abrasive, you will not need a lot of material when this is working correctly.
2. you could caulk the seams a lot easier
3. I wired up a couple of low voltage halogens that helped a lot.
4. I hooked up a shop vac. because even with the light the dust made seeing difficult.

I added a fitting under the collection area to hook the hose to from the outside...works great

Does your unit have a ledge around the inside of it in order to hold the "shelf" (where you put your part)?

Mine is completely home made. I used an old dishwasher basket turned upside down, added metal mesh to create a bottom to hold parts & allow media to fall through.
