Spark Plug Wire Trouble with Hooker Headers
« on: August 01, 2007 - 01:44:13 AM »
I have hooker competition headers on the 340 that is in my 74 Cuda.  The clearance for the spark plug wires is horrible.  I am running accel 300+ 8.8mm race wires on the motor and the plug boots are straight.  I bought a set of DEI plug boot insulators, but the heat is still getting to the plug wires.  Does anyone have any suggestion as to what to do?  I like the wires that are on the motor, and I don't want to ruin them.  Is there a certain degree angle boot that I need to buy for these two wires? 90*, 115*, 135*?

On my car, the 5 and 7 wires go outside the headder, and go up from the downside, into 90* boots.. Got no heat probs..

Summit sells a type of insulation made just for your problem. Wish I could remember the name of the stuff and who makes it. But it is very good. The wires or insulators can lay right on the exhaust and not burn through. I used it on my 499 with 2 1/8 tubes. It comes in lenghts and you cut to fit your size. It's like nomex or tivex. Used it on my brake lines too. Last for years

This is exactly why I recommend the TTi headers , you can actually remove the spark plugs & not burn the wires
the fix is to use a longer wire & 90* boot at the end & go under the header as suggested above

No problem here, Hooker Super Comp's 1 3/4 " tubes..
On yours you can get an old head bolt the header to it and use heat and try bending it or cut that tube and modify it with a new piece. Cheaper than buying a new set.....
