Tranny question
« on: August 05, 2007 - 02:06:11 PM »
ive got a 727 thats been sitting for about 5 years still in the car mind you well the front seal has been leaking some.  So the fluid level is low could i just fill it up and be able to count on this tranny?  It was rebuilt about 10 years ago im going to be pulling the engine anyway to rebuild the 440 and swap in a 383 for the time being.  I thought id change the front seal and the filter and gasket but i really didnt wanna do another rebuld if i didnt have to.  Any thoughts?

It sounds like a good plan to me.  Seals leak over time, if the car doesn't get driven. So it's not like the tranny went bad on you.

That's funny...I've just been playing with the '69.Same deal...leaky front seal, over time emptied the tranny. It used to slip some.I just filled it up and went for alittle cruise. No more slipping!  I hate the smell of burning tranny fluid! But I'm just gonna' run her and see... :dunno:

The seal may get it, but You may also want to look at the converter neck. The hubs have a tendency to groove up and leak too. Hope it isnt your case, but be sure to look for a crack along the ear, a leak at the weld , or a groove in the hub.

If you are going to pull the trans to change the front seal, you might as well pull the pump to change the pump o-ring. If you're pulling the pump, it'll only take a few more minutes to check all of the clutches for overheating. If they were overheating then the piston seals are bad, if not, then throw it back together with a new shifter shaft seal and dipstick o-ring too.  That should solve any front leaking problems.

thanks for the input yeah the tranny didnt have very many miles on it before it was parked(but needdless to say they were hard miles).  Im gonna throw in a newer stall anyway i just wanted to be safe cause if i do all that work and the tranny dosent work i'll be pissed to say the least.  But thats still a lil bit down the road.
