Calling Terry-tactransman
« on: August 16, 2007 - 07:02:23 PM »
I have a tech question about the 727 in my T/A. When I first start the car I have to put the trans in N and let it run for a while before it will go in gear. It got worse after I put in a 4000 stall convertor. Once it's pumped up it shifts rock hard. Just slow cruising it will skwack the tires on 1-2 shift and if I'm on it it does the same on 2-3 shift. I live with it but I was wondering if you had a guess as to what would be wrong if anything? Also I've put in several front seals and the last one was 2 years ago and it's leaking again. Any help would be gladly taken!!

This is the trans I have in the car. The tag says B&M Racing Transmittion and has a serial number.

I'm not terry, but if you let it sit for a couple days between running the torque converter fluid will drain back into the pan. It won't move until you let it sit in N for a little bit due to the fact in Park it won't pump fluid through the converter and fill it back up.  Where is it leaking from??

Like Mike said,it is probably drain back. I would get a different valve body and put a Transgo shift kit in it.Transgo addresses the drain back problem by charging the converter in park,B&M doesn't. It probably got worse after the stall converter change because the pump bushing to converter hub clearance is more now due to the size of the stall converter hub. Think of the drain back like this;do you remember the old oil cans that you had to puncture a hole in 'em to get the oil out? Well you always punched a second hole to let the air in so the oil would come out faster, the clearance of the hub to pump bushing is the other hole, the more clearance the quicker it drains down. In short the drain back doesn't hurt anything,it is just annoying.

P.S. front seals hardly ever leak on their own, something usually makes them leak, cracked converter hub, leaking converter weld, worn pump bushing, porosity in the case or maybe it is the pump "O" ring.

Thanks for the insite. I guess I'll just live with it. It really dosn't bother me, just some times it would be handy if you could start it and through it in gear and go. I suppose if I took it back to stock it would work that way. NAAA I like it this way much more!!
