I know this is probably a stupid question and I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but will a warn out automatic tranny and/or torque converter rob significant HP from the engine?

Yep. Slipping clutches/bands will not let full powerflow to the tires.

It's more a power sponge. Like what Goody said... Your engien will always make the same amount of power. But not all of it will get thru the trans to the tires.
