Watch your speed in ontario!
« on: August 16, 2007 - 09:39:22 AM »
WATCH YOUR SPEED IN ONTARIO - Ontario, Canada, has a new law that say if you're caught driving 31 mph over the speed limit it'll automatically trigger "street racing" penalties -- even if the accused motorist is driving alone on an otherwise empty road. The change in definition will, in effect, turn ordinary speeding into an offense that can carry a $9,000 fine and up to six months in jail, making it one of the most expensive traffic tickets in North America.

IS this really true?

Who drives 31 over?  86 in a 55?  You should be charged $9000.   :2cents:

If you wanna go fast, save it for the strip.   :burnout:

Just because you are a good driver, doesnt mean everyone else is.

While I do agree, it seems that this can be abused.

While driving to make a delivery heading South, I noticed that the speed limit on the highway dropped from 65 to 50.  Now I didn't see a reason for the speed change, no construction, no exits and nothing out of the ordinary (winding highway, bridges, etc..).  I just kept up with traffic and we all stayed at 70.

Now coming back the same route going North the speed limit stayed at 65 the entire time  :clueless:

I haven't been up in Canada for a bit but I remember that on the highways people up there seem to drive faster than the people on U.S. highways.

I'm I imagining things or is this true?  :clueless:

I live in Ontario and have been watching this development in the news. It's all true and suppose to come into effect at the end of next month (if I heard/read correctly). Along with the 31mph over fine you automatically lose your licence for a week. Also, I read, that if you use nitrous oxide on the street the penalty could up to a $2,000.00cdn fine and 6 months in jail. Of late, we've had a few accidents and deaths resulting from street racing.
