Timing ? - total is same as at idle with MSD?
« on: August 15, 2007 - 10:39:31 AM »
Well I got my new engine running and have a question.  My set-up 440 10.2:1 compression, Holley SD, 750 carb vac. secondary, auto trans and MSD 6AL w/MSD Pro billet distributor and Blaster 3 coil.
Now my question is this, when I timed the engine I set the total time at 3000RPM at 34*.  It stays at 34 degrees n o matter what RPM, idle timing is at 34*, 5500 timing is 34*.  Is this normal for the ignition set-up?
When I ran the MSD distributor with the Holley Street Annihilator set-up, the advanced was different at idle versus cruise.
I will say that it starts better, before I timed it it was around 19* (total and idle) and would start hard.  Now it starts easy but it seems to be running hotter, I could idle all day and never see 180*, now at idle it gets to 195*.
Any input would be great, if I need not worry just let me know.

BTW, my old iginition set-up I'd see the timing mark boucne a little bit - with my new set-up it is rock steady  :woo:

the advance mechanism inside the dist is jammed or seized , you should ahve some curve

Hmmm, very strange, I'll have to pull the distributor and check for some signs of seizure or something.  I don't understand why it wouldn't be working right  :banghead:

I just wanted to thank everyone that chimed in.  As it turned out, I had locked out the advance on teh distributor to run the Holley Annhilator ignition.  That system controlled the timing curves electronically.
Swithcing to the MSD, it doesn't do that.  I studied and then came across my parts box and found all that was needed.  So right now my timing is set at 16* idle and advances to 36*.  I reach 34* @ 3000 and am all in with 36* @ 3760.
I shall see how it performs now, I can adjust the all in RPM range with some collars.  Thanks again for the input  :burnout:

Oh and it starts quicker too  :2thumbs:
