TKO 600 Tremec ??
« on: July 16, 2007 - 10:57:09 AM »
If converting to a 5-speed installation and wanting to use a Tremec TKO 600 without using Keisler or Classic, etc. what transmission to you start with? A Ford or GM based tranny?

I'm talking fabbing the mount and using a Lakewood or aftermarket bell with a custom driveshaft, etc.

Just trying to see if there is a way around the $3,500 minimum kit cost. I run across near new 600's now and then.

Thanks, Wes

Tremec 5008 - Ford base - Not a secret, just alot of machining to fit into an E-body.

Tony,
Thanks. I'll in all honesty probably be buying a kit when it comes down to it, but once in a while I see a deal on the trans alone and I'm not afraid of a little fabrication. When you speak of machining that needs to be done, are you referring to the shifter relocation items? Or the tail piece for clearance?

Thanks, Wes

Hi Wes;

Machining refers to tail shaft clearancing and shifter relocation.  Moving the shifter to penetrate the floor in the correct position on an E-body is difficult since the Tremec is internally shifted. (Read custom bracket to mount the shifter body)  The clearancing for the torsion bar cross member is required if you don't want to cut the torsion bar cross member.  (This may be beyond most peoples fabrication skills - mine included).  It is a challenge and can be expensive if you do a custom "One-off".

The TKO transmission swap is still a great upgrade for our cars, though, regardless of who's kits you choose or make of your own.

I would have converted yesterday  to a 5 speed but don't like the idea that you have to  cut the  tunnel to make it fit.

OK dont want to steel the post but what is the diffenece between Keisler and Classic Mopar.  The only thing I see is Classic doesnt come with a pedel kit.  But that can be baught sepertly through Keisler for $230.  here are the 2 sites:

http://www.keislerauto.com/mopar/transmissions/e-body_70-74-auto.asp

http://www.classicmopar5speed.com/Eilte-Mopar-Transmission.aspx

so which one is recommended?

I'd go with Keisler, have one coming myself. Seems as though they've been doing it the longest.
They've managed to get the process down to a rather simple and stress free install I've heard.

Was around 3-4 weeks and it's on it's way from the wharf with my car (LA) 100% complete, along with other parts Dr-Diff, XV kits, etc. So, it was ready 4 weeks ago. Got shipped late June so they were right on schedule, no thanks to me changing bellhousings and upgrading to get the bits needed for the Hemi. Would have shipped then, in late June but my car wasn't ready to ship. It's on it's way now from LA to Wellington, New Zealand.

Did you have your car built in LA?  How much is it to ship a car to New Zealand.....for the love of mopar muscle.  Your car sounds awesome, I hope that it is everything that you hoped for!  Cheers.

"For the love of Mopar muscle" lol that's a good one.  :lol2:

Nope, just purchased a project car (of sorts) from LA, had it trucked to LA wharf where another Kiwi works as a importer/locator (Kiwi Shipping) and had to wait for the other heavy parts to arrive so I could save on shipping. The diff would have been around $1,500 USD shipping to New Zealand but on a pallet with my car it's only $150, $150 buys you a pallet. My car cost $2,200 USD to ship to NZ, all paper work and import stuff taken care of by my importer guy. All I have to do is pick the car up 25 minutes from home, sign the paper work and put the car and parts on the trailer and get to work! Thanks mate, too kind, she will be a great car just at the moment shes the platform.

For what it's worth, I recently bought a Keisler from "The Driven Man".  Since I live in the Carolinas, I was able to get it from him without paying any transportation.  Saved about  $150.  Check out his website  www.thedrivenman.com
