How far down does tranny dipstick go?
« on: August 18, 2007 - 11:26:58 AM »
Does anyone have a pic of the dipstick from the bottom, with the pan off?  I just changed my pan gasket for the 4th time.  No leaks for the 1st couple of days, as I added fluid to fill it up.  Once the fluid got to a certain point, full according to dipstick. It started leaking again.  Never have been able to tell where it's coming from.

Now the rub, I have a feeling the dipstick is too short (or the tube is too long).  When I looked at the tip of the dipstick when I had the pan off, it only had 1/2" hanging down.  Now that I think about it, the only way to get it show full is to add so much fluid that is actually filling up the tube.

Wish I had taken a pic!  :swear:

a half to 3/4 inch sounds right going by memory.  Your tube has an oring on the end of it that sometimes leaks.

A 1/2 inch sticking from the bottom of the filler tube would be the maximum on a 904/727 ,I would say 3/8 to 1/2 inch.

I was hoping this was wrong.
There is 2-3 inches of room, even more with the deep pan on there!

So in order for the fluid level to be full, it has to completely fill (above the gasketed area) the pan AND rise up into the dipstick tube?

Basically, full is at the top of the case where the filler tube hole is. (if you removed the filler tube with the engine idling in neutral nothing would run out)
