Need Grill assembly help....
« on: August 20, 2007 - 10:17:17 PM »
Bought the car with new fiberglass fenders already hung, no headlight buckets or grill in, but I did get them. Now I am trying to figure out how to mount the grill. I have located the 4 bolts across the top and one on the lower center, but I have no filler pan installed, and it lookes like the grill has a square slot on each end that would slide over some support. I got what looked like a filler panel but since I have the glass fenders things dont look familier. I know I;ll have to mount the headlight buckets but getting the grill hung in the right place is first. I need some picture.....it there a filler panel under the grill, and if so, how does it attach to the inner fenders???? Maybe I am wrong on the square supports on each lower end of the grill but it would seem to need some sort of support to hold it up.

Thanks, George

No lower filler panel in '71.
Is your header panel fiberglass too? If it is I recommend chucking it and using a steel stock one. It doesn't weigh much and it will locate your grille and hold it correctly.  I don't have any pics of the lower mounts but it sounds to me like you might have to build something...

I tried a glass header panel in the past but it just flopped around and let the fenders flop around too.( not good for expensive grilles)   A steel one reinforces and triangulates the whole front end nicely

My header is the stock steel one, and my car  is a 72. I got this panel with the parts and it doesnt seem to fit anyway. I can see the grill hangs by 5 screws and and I can see the one in the center at the bottom side, but nothing at the bottom on each end. I can see a small square hole near the ends at the bottom that I guessed something was supposed to slide into for support, but, now that I think about it, there were two pieces broken off my grill (I have them to re attach) and now I bet they are the ones that have mounting holes for support! I'll check them out tonight, now for reattaching, I was thinking of fiberglass cloth, should I use screws and strips of thin metal underneath?

Thanks, George
