VIN# Privacy
« on: October 11, 2007 - 01:38:26 PM »
I have seen threads discussing VIN#/ fendor tag fraud.........how rampant is this?  A while back, I have even heard stories of people grinding and restamping components like drivetrains, radiator mounts, etc..

Is it safe to broadcast VIN#/ fendor tag in a public forum or does that present an opportunity for someone to "clone" your car?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I would imagine identity theft could happen to anything, even my poor challenger.

Regards,

Its a good question, I even thought about it myself, a lot of people will blur out the last 6 digits of their vin number if posting a pic of their fender tag, or if they are posting the vin, its not with the tag, I guess one or the other, but I wouldn't post your whole vin with your fender tag..lol.  Even if you did, its a risky business to try and steal the identity of someones car, and woudn't be worth the risk.

The dash VIN is also known as the "public VIN" most states have laws that require it to be in plain view. I have never heard of it being enforced, but in some sates if the dash VIN is covered at a car show or whatever you could be fined. Same thing with covered license plates.
