Steering Column Question

I have heard, that you can use a power steering colum in a manual steering car with out using an adaptor.

Can someone tell me how this works, and what year colums will work.  Pics or diagrams would help too! 

My main shaft is fubar, and I am having trouble finding a resonably priced manual column, but I have seen a few very reasonable power columns.  I have not had any luck finding just a main shaft, OE or aftermarket.

the power & manual steering shafts have to be different lengths , there is an adapter to extend the power unit for manual

almost all of those shafts pull out or push in to adjust it's length.  Once you do that, you just have to change the coupler on the end to match the splined end of your steering column.
