Trans without valve body installed. It easy when the trans is out of the car, but you can do it wile it is still in there.

The thread that TAC started with how to modify your valve body would be a good start to orient  yourself with the valve body. As long as you take your time and don't overtighten anything it wouldn't be too hard of a job.

Ok, so I've let it sit for a few days, since sunday to be exact. 

Its still leaking!   :pullinghair:

Now I'm confused.  Its not leaking from the places I pointed out before.  Those must leak only when in use.

Where can it leak when its just sitting?  The pan?  I just put a new gasket in last fall.  One of those plasticy ones from mopar with the rubber like rings in it.   :eek4:

Maybe I need to do some more cleaning...

When the car sits, the converter can (and usually does) drain into the pan, so it adds a few extra quarts in there which may cause it to leak more than when it is running. Still I think the #1 thing to do is change the shift shaft seal, from the pictures you posted, it is definitely leaking and it will leak when the car sits too. The gasket you have is about the best one to use. Again, start with the shift shaft seal, then after that is done, clean it again and see what else may be leaking.

What ever you do,don't split the VB halves. :grinno:  do not remove the Phillips or slot headed screws,only the 7/16 bolts!

If it isn't leaking a quart a week, then that's what I would do. It is the driving season now.  :burnout:  I also agree with purple1's shift-kit recommendation. I have a trans-go shift kit in mine now, and it is fun to play with. Not all that expensive either compared to other upgrades we make.

Mike, it doesnt leak near that.  Its not even really a puddle on the floor, its just seeping everywhere.  Leaks drive me CRAZY though.  One of my major pet peeves of an automobile.  Sort of like tossing $$ on the ground. 

Shift kit sounds good.  I dont want to get too wild with it, just a little more fun.   :bigsmile:

I think that if you take a look at how to remove the valve body and the seal, set aside some time and do it, you would be much happier. You could probably do this in under 4 hours (very conservative estimate) taking your time. After the seal is done, enjoy it for the summer, then when winter comes you will be more confident in working with the valve body and installing a shift kit. You can keep putting fluid in it, but it will cause other problems, most common would be wiping out the trans mount or getting trans fluid on the exhaust (that's a nice smell) or even on the back of the car. I can post the whole procedure if you like, but I'm pretty sure that TAC has already posted that before.

Mine WAS leaking about a quart a week on the garage floor after drain-down of converter, and spending 8 bucks at local chrysler dealer to get the shaft seal and throttle-shaft seal was one of the best investments ever! I did mine with tranny in, but had to drop the valve body to really work on the seals. All in all, about 4 hours of work (counting the time to go to NAPA to pick up new shaft seal to replace the one that bent trying to drive in with floor hump in way, arghhhhhh)...  NAPA shaft seal number is 1-4582, and cost 2.50, if you don't mind not having the original MOPAR type seal...

Finally got shaft seal installed, buttoned everything up, and voila.... no leak!

(next project is installing a power-trax locker on the diff... will get pix of that installation)

btw... check that tranny mount... mine was all mushed out and soggy from the tranny oil that blows back cruising. I got one of the poly units coming with the locker... 8  )
