New Axles are too long!
« on: August 24, 2007 - 10:15:24 PM »
Okay I 've been waiting for weeks to get my diff rebuilt and my new axles to arrive.  I slap pick up the 8 3/4diff and slap it in and take a drive shaft length measurement and run to the drive shaft shop to get a new one made.  I pick up the new driveshaft later that day and come home to install the seals and axles thinking I'm going to get this thing on the road again this weekend.  The axles bottom out and the bearing won't even touch the bore. The axles are 2 inches too long! i take out the tape and the axles are 29 3/4" (30 " nominal) which is supposed to be right for the Cuda.  I measure the old ones and they are 27 3/4"! WTF -the old ones are A body length axles.  There is not much spline on them so it looks like someone may have swapped in an A body axle housing or narrowed the stock housing.  It doesn't look narrowed. I'll have to run out to the garage and take a bunch of measurements.  Can I just cut the axles down with a cut-off wheel on a grinder or do they have to be machined down?

if you have enough spline you can cut the axles , cut a little at a time to keep it cool to prevent altering the hardening of the splines

I'll try my cut-off wheel and see how easy it cuts.  There is a ton of spline so that is not a problem.  I think Yukon makes one axle and just cuts them for each application.  I'm guessing that the housing was narrowed at some point in time but I don't seem to have extra clearance with my 275/60/15's

Do you have a clutch style sure grip that you can now remove the center button because you don't need it with green bearings?

I took some measurements inside the diff and found that the max. axle length is 27 11/16 with zero end clearance so I'm taking the axles back to the shop and they will cut them down to 27 1/2".  I'm still perplexed as to why I didn't notice that the diff is 4 inches narrower than stock.  You would think it would be very noticeable????  Does it look narrow to you guys?

Why don't you just get the right rear end? If somebody narrowed it and didn't do it correctly, it could be a time bomb just waiting to go off.
