When idling, at a standstill, air actually flows out the scoops!

If not ducted to the carb, the air may have been from fan pressure under the hood.

What about fabricating 2 smaller items from the scoops shape to a round shape.  Then ducting to the thing that kingtroll posted.  Might be easier to find something to fit in a round duct that could switch between scoop air and under hood air. :dunno:

I could understand that at a stand still they become heat vents. There is a whole lotta heat under the hood of our cars.

I agree that they may not be high enough up in the airflow to make a big difference in power, but, how big is big.  If they aren't isolated to feed the carb directly, they will actually make no difference at all. A properly sealed fresh air system can remove at least a couple of tenths at the drag strip though. How much of a difference the smallish, low factory scoops make may be pretty minimal.

But it is cool, none the less.

doesnt a cooler engine run better

It depends. Cooler intake air makes a big difference. A cooler engine doesn't necessarily make more power. Plus, the heat released through a scoop at idle now becomes drag when the car is moving forward as it packs the engine compartment with additional air that now is exiting under the car creating a higher pressure zone where you want low pressure. You ever watch a Cup team adding and/or removing tape from the nose of a car during a race? You don't want any more air moving through the car than is necesary to keep the cooling system functioning. I doubt any of that is a big impact on an early 70s E body, but just food for thought.

i just figured that the cooler engine would make the air and engine surroundings cooler

Yes the scoops do dump alot of air at a stop. They also clear the hot air when your going down the road. They funnel in much more air than you might think. I'm not looking to just toss pieces of aftermarket stuff together to make it work. The scoop for the underside of the hood is almost complete.I've tested three different shapes.Added a metal plate along the mounting points to beef it up.I'm finding the smoothest, cleanest look with a baffle that comes up from the bottom vs. the end. It takes up too much room, looks funny too.  I'm working on a way to switch between letting air go to the carb.,to dump heat out,and to close for wet weather.  This system, once set up correctly will drop down and seal around the carb. when you close the hood. You will be able to choose where the air goes from inside the car.  I have even looked into vacum operated baffles....so when you hit the gas the baffles open, like on a carb.   I thought it was alittle goofy though...

Cutting the cast scoops out was the real hard part. I wanted them to look nice. You could probably do it real nice with a jig and a mill.Mayby someday...
