exterior door handle removal?
« on: September 03, 2007 - 08:53:00 PM »
I am trying to remove my driver's door handle (outside) I can't see much in there.  Everything seems to be off except a connection or two.   I have no diagram.  Is there a something else to disconnect except the main stud?

You have the 7/16 nut that holds it on.  There are 2 rods connected to it.  One is a large one that goes down to the door latching mechanism.  The other small rod goes to the door lock.  The large rod has a nylon clip on it that you pivot to get it loose. The small rod you will have to bend a little to get it loose.  The handle will come out by pulling the bottom out first.  From there you can work with the rods.  I take the latch rod off before I start to undo the handle.  I will undo the lock rod after I pull the bottom of the handle loose.  There are many variations on the theme of how to take it out.  You will find your own way by working with it.

Also push the handle assembly out from the rear.  If you pull it out using the handle part, that lifts to open the door, you run the risk of breaking the handle.

I agree with StrOker -- take the panel off and then you can disconnect the rods.   I did mine for the first time just last weekend -- not a big job.    Good luck!
