There are people out there that make fake "factory appearing" VIN tags. Some of them have been arrested.

The legal way to deal with this situation is to apply for a state issued VIN tag.  :2cents:

Somehow I knew you would say exactly that Barry.  Doesn't that mean that the vin tag that is supposed to go on the dash now has added numbers and looks totally diffrent.  If I get one of these diffrent looking vin tags, is it legal to put a repoduction one over it, not permanent of course, so that it looks like it did when original?   I have read several articles about people being arrested for trying to fake cars and what not.  I definitely don't want to be dishonest or illegal by any means.   After all what goes around comes around right.
As usual, thanks Barry for your hugely, sometimes seemingly endless brain full of knowledge.  Say, how many months of the year do you get to drive your cuda's up there in Alaska?

Since your car is going to be around an hrs drive from my home, I may can help you with getting the car inspected and have an official  inspect it for you. I do have a trailer to help bring it to the troopers post or wher ever they do it. and I can get you a registration and tag for it since I am local. If you trust me that is :roflsmiley: It would be tagged in my name and then I will have to sell it back to you.  I have only done this for a very few selct people. We had the cars vin check at the court house first.

I'm here if you need me Josh and glad to help....ALAN

I'd start by trying to find the VIN stampings in the usual locations. Try looking are the radiator brace, the cowl and the trunk lip. There may be more locations but those are all I can think of right now. It won't give you the whole VIN but the last six numbers should be there. That at least should give a place to start by being able to confirm the original VIN sequence number. If these parts appear to have been swapped out or the numbers don't match though, all bets are off.

The sequence numbers are correct and match both the cowl and the radiator shroud.  thanks

Josh, If you look on the map, Oneonta is around 25 or 30 miles from springville, then another 30 or so to my house. I am close to I 65 which is the route that is going to be closer for the cars journey to your house. I also have a new shop it can set in .  It will be easier to start doing the inspection stuff from there. I also installed a security system  in my shop too.  I think I have one goodmark spare lower quater panel section I have no use for if your car needs it. Maybe some other stuff to help you with this project.  Even if I am on the road, I am not bringing my wife out next month. It will be winter or close to it and my schedule shows, Ohio, oklahoma, kentuky nebraska. I may be going by your area this sunday. I havent decided my route yet. I gotta drop my helper off in casper wyoming to fly out to another job sunday

The state issued VIN tag will look different, and they are usualy riveted to the driver's side door jamb.

There is no such thing as a "reproduction" VIN plate, again, in the eyes of the law they are called "counterfit".

At least with the state issued VIN the car will be legal.

Not to bring you down, but that car is going to cost way more to fix than it is worth.  Unless the person who restores it does restorations for a living it'll cost 50k to bring that thing back from the dead, and at the end of the day it is still a Barracuda.  It may have one unusual option, but those side scoops aren't going to make the car worth the restoration costs.  I'd pass and wait for a better M46 car to come along.  I know that's a tough thing to do, especially since you don't see many, but in the long run I think you'd be better off financially.

Financially you are probably correct.  However, I ride these cars for the look and the feel of them.  I am not purchasing this to make any money at all.  Actually I really don't expect to get my return on this car as I would not be surprised if the market falls out on the cuda's eventually.  The car is terribly rough but if you saw the 73 I drive on a daily basis you would probably think I was crazy.  This car will amuse me until, as you said, I find a better M46 car.  Matter of a fact, if you saw the AAR that sits in my garage I am sure you would think I was crazy for buying it.  None the less letting it take up valuable garage space.
The next thing is that I have been looking for that code for close to two years now and this is the first and only one that I have found.  The only one.  And you are right, in the end it is just a barracuda.  That's probably the only reason that I am able to get this car.  If it was a Cuda then I am sure that many of you out there would have purchased it for way more than I can afford.  I can't afford a V code car but I sure can make one and drive it like it's stolen.
Investment value is nice and all but when it comes down to it, I just like to drive the cars, FAST.
Thanks for the honest opinion Jeff.  My mechanic said the same thing, I must be crazy!!
Do you know of another M46 for sale?  I would be glad to entertain the purchase.
