HELP....a few important questions! Ready to assemble my 360
« on: September 12, 2007 - 04:40:34 PM »
Its been years since I have done this....how about a few tips and suggestions on assembling this mild 360?

I have a 1978 360 block that is freshly bored .060 over, have the new pistons pressed on the rods and the crank is polished. Heads are early 70's iron w/fresh 3 angle valve job, Edlebrock performer intake and the mild Mopar Perf cam. Of course I need the torque specs for the rods/mains/head, but my immediate concerns are installation of the distributor and the new timing chain/gears.

Thanks, George in Tallahassee

George, remember that the rods go on the crank with the cam oilers in. This locates the pistons front. Not around my shop for tq specs for you.  Better read up on centerlining a cam as for installing a chain. Some chains are off a bit. Rotate the engine over with your finger covering the #1 spark hole it will build up pressure and blow out look at your balancer now, it will or should be around 16-18 or in general area to point the rotor at #1 on the cap.

Thanks. THe machine shop pressed the pistons on the rods and the pistons are marked front and the rod had a white dot on the same side, so I guess he matched the new piston. I am not sure what you mean about the cam oiler facing in? I was planning on the 'front' of the piston heading toward the front of the motor, but I didnt see any thing that looked different on the sides of the pistion?

Thanks, George

If "stock" rod bolts, my book says 45 ft/lbs, 85 on mains, 90 on heads ?

Anybody else got a book ?, mines all hand written numbers from the old guy ?

The oiler is a small hole on the rod, not the piston
