440 Question
« on: October 10, 2007 - 12:06:43 AM »
I just purchased a bare 440 block with main caps.  I noticed one of the main bolts is missing.  can these be easily replaced or must they be replaced with vintage bolts?  I hope this is not a stupid question.  I don't know much about engines.

ARP should make main cap bolts and studs if you'd rather.

The only stupid question is the one we dont ask  I assume you are going to rebuild it and new head bolts/studs, main bolts/studs and rod bolts should be on the short list. Bolts stretch when they are torqued rendering them unsatisfactory for reuse and besides that, new bolts are made of much better alloy than the old factory ones. Cheap insurance with the new bolts  :2thumbs:

:iagree:   Any new build should get new main, and rod bolts. ARP sells a complete kit, a very cheap upgrade. Good luck with your build.

One detail to add... If you use new blots (meaning not factory replacement 40 yr old ones, but new bolts...) the main bore alignment should be checked. If you use better than stock blots or studs, you will have to align hone to get things back "into shape".
