Fitting the steering column?
« on: October 07, 2007 - 09:00:16 AM »
Have started to fit the steering column but having trouble getting the coupler to seat all the way on the steering box.  Is there a trick to this as there isn't really anywhere to tap it with ahammer or press it home?

Do you have the offset splines lined up? It should only go on one way, wont be super easy to slide on there, much much easier than with it not lined up though

You probably know this already, the coupler should only go down so far so that you can get the split pin in. It helps to clean up the splines inside the coupler and on the steering box and lube it. Also, like Goody said, make sure the master/offset spline is lined up.

Sometimes I have trouble getting them down to the role pin too. A way I do it by myself is to put the steering wheel up higher in the seat with a box, pillow or anything on the close to correct angle. Then I take a clean grease rag and a pair of vise grips and grab the coupling tight. I then tap it down with a hammer slowly as to not knock the holding pin up and loose the inner stuff or undo the grease clamps.

Thanks guys, I'll have another go at it on the weekend.  Was trying to fit it by myself which probably wasn't making it any easier.
