Front trim on hood - differences
« on: October 10, 2007 - 11:04:12 AM »
Does it matter what style front trim I have on a Rallye hood for a Challenger.  I know the 70's used a clip on retainer style and then 71 up uses the lip with the screws.  Is there any differences besides the attachment method.

Yes, I believe there are three different styles of this trim piece; 1970 trim which uses retainer clips, 1971 trim which has a polished look (like the 70) and attaches from underneath by way of a flange with screws and 1972-1974 trim which is painted body color but attaches the same as the 71 piece.

Can anyone confirm this with pictures?

Russ,

I think you got it right, but of course I have no pics to prove it.  :walkaway:

On my 74, the hood trim is attached by screws from the bottom.

Ok, I am in agreeance with this.  From the research, the specs are the same for the flat hood and rallye hood, just the mounting method changed from the first year.  Was the piece always an anodized piece of aluminum or was it stainless steel?

I can confirm that I moved the trim from my flat hood to my rallye hood to replace a damanged piece.

Does the trim attach to the front of the fenders in the same way?.  I'm wondering how easy it would be to put chrome trim around the grille opening on a '72-'74.

What would correspond to the "trim" on the fenders is actually part of the fiberglass header panel, and not removeable by itself.

Not to hijack this thread, but I've seen the wider '71 trim on '73s - does the wide trim fit over the regular trim?

You can paint the "trim" silver to look like it is chrome/satin/aluminum.  I'd do this first before spendnig big $$ on the wide trim.

As far as how it attaches to teh fender portion, I don't know, that is a good question.

I have a 70 and 71 piece of molding and they are both aluminum.

I'd ove to have chrome wrapping around the nose of my 74, but to do so would likely require cutting the fiberglass nose piece to allow the trim to fit.
