New Quarter panel, whats next to do
« on: January 16, 2008 - 10:22:29 AM »
I just received my new quarter panel last week.
I need to know what the best choice would be on what to do on the inside of it. Should I...

Scuff the e coat and epoxy primer it?
not scuff it and Epoxy primer it
strip it first...(but I would think the e coating is good to keep on)
Or just use a regular primer over it scuffed or not?

I saw that Resto Rick sells the most accurate type of inner fender undercoating to the OEM. Anyone use his stuff?

Body work stuff is somewhat new to me so any help is appreciated.

Very good questions.  I will have to watch this one.  I have been wondering what I would do also.  I want mine to last forever.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

Mike, member 'Steve' had some of the best bodywork threads   until the decision to sell his ride :(  Here's the one he started on quarter panels. His account is still active; maybe his email addy is as well :dunno:

beeing in autobody industry for almost 20 years, I strongly suggest scuffing the e-coat before application of any material,

:iagree:   I'm a complete novice, and it seems that most people recommend scuffing and then epoxy primer.  That being said, if you read the P sheet for the DPLF it says it can be applied over clean unsanded E-coat.

On mine I cleaned it well first, then used wax and grease remover on it, just to be safe.  Then scuffed it with a red scotchbrite pad before applying the epoxy primer.  You might not want the epoxy on the backside of anywhere you have to weld.  However I've read that it's fine to weld over the E-coat.

I would scuff sand the primer with 320 or a scratch pad. Then apply the undercoat. Be sure to use either the stuff from Resto Rick or at least a product that will accept piant. I use Speedliner bed coating for this. It is not available at stores so you would have to locate a dealer in your area.
When you coat it tape the area around the side marker and around the edges that will be welded.
Basicly the factory coated the center of the panel for sound deadening.

Thanks Dave, Travis, and Stephan.
Once I get a warmer week end, I plan to scuff and primer. Then decide what type of undercoating to go with.

My body guy scuffed the parts a little first, then applied weld thru epoxy primer on it and fitted the panels. Then came the final finish detailing of the metal then on went epoxy primer again, then what little bondo he used. As soon as possible paint over the epoxy primer (and filler) with a sealing primer as epoxy primer/body filler soaks up moisture within a week or so.
