70 only Master Cylinder 2229171

 I have asked this question in another post but did not get an answer so let me try it by itself.

The picture I showed at the top  is what I thought to be an original M/C for a 70 Challenger but now I'm confused. I found this one below with these numbers

E9175 2 7 040B  I believe this ti be the date code info am I right to say the 40th day of 70

2229171   03490   3B Casting number etc.

But are they the  same M/C one thermometer front is an inny and on is an outer. Which is for the 70? and what is the other for ?

They both have a casting number of 2229171

This may or may not help but I seem to remember to 70 used a tall master clyinder like the 70 B-body except the lines for the B-body were to the engine side. E's were to the fender side both the tall type.
Here is the part numbers for the E bodys
2944453 1970 with out 426
2944476  1970 with 426
I think the date on that one is 349 day of 1970

you are correct on which number is the date code, but not on deciphering it.  7 040 is the 40th day of a year ending in 7, most likely '77.
Bendix made these master cylinders for at least 6 or 7 years after the model year as replacement parts, a master cylinder is a wear part.
Look closer at that 03490 number on the bottom.  I bet the two zeros are actually the imprints of phillips head screws that the foundary used to screw a date code plate into the mold pattern. That would make the casting date 349. Casting casted 49th week of '73 probably.
I'm lost on your last question, inny, outy, are we talking about belly buttons or your E body master cylinder? :biggrin:

No features on either master cylinder in the pictures looks indented to me, they are both "outties" as far as I can tell, maybe take a picture of yours at the same angle/perspective as the other and circle the feature you think is different?
Here is a picture of the correct master cylinder on my '70 convertible.

If you scroll down to the area on the master cylinder, check the third inset pic on the right. Could you be reading '0 349 C' as '0 349 0'? Personally I think you're ok to use the mc in your pics and that it dates out to 349 0 or 349th day of 1970 :2cents:

the 03490 he referred to is a casted in number on the bottom, near the 2229171 number.  the number shown in the article is the stamped in numbers on the side of the casting.
The date code for the assembly is one of the stamped in numbers on the side of the casting. 040 day of ('7)7. 
Is "Made in Canada" stamped above the datecode and 9175 number?  Later (mid 70's) replacement part Bendix master cylinders  usually are stamped made in Canada.  In the early 70's there was often a sticker affixed to the master cylinder that said this.  In the late 60's/1970 vintage they would paintstamp "made in canada" usually on the bare metal flange surface where it abutted the booster when installed.

Yes it does say made in Canada

 So its an original replacemet master with the same casting number as the original?

You have the correct master cylinder for a '70 E body with disc brakes. :thumbsup:  As I mentioned before the master cylinder is a wear part and therefore they were still manufactured for at least 6 or 7 years after production of the cars ended to sell as replacement parts.  With a '77 datecode and the made in Canada stamp yours is a late manufactured example, but it is a correct OEM Bendix part not an aftermarket copy.  If you are doing an OE gold restoration then you are going to be looking for a '69 or early '70 datecode that will procede your cars build date, but if that's not your goal than you are in good shape!

Any help with this as I thought some of them were made in usa but maybe just as a after market unit. I will attach pictures of my master cylinder so maybe someone can figure out what I have here.

Aftermarket. Raybestos MC 36283 or Napa United 36283.  The company that made that one shut down manufacturing in the US in the last 2 years and moved all their brake part manufacturing to China so at least your master cylinder is one that isn't made anymore?   :sadwavey:
