Rear exhaust mount - heat shield between mount and body?
« on: October 10, 2007 - 08:44:24 AM »
I noticed in the factory service manual that the rear-most exhaust hangers had a layer of heat-shield between the external bracket and the body.  Can anyone tell me what this was made of and whether it is necessary to replace it?

My guess would be that it was asbestos, you could probably get some of the muffler bandage material from the auto parts store.

Actually it is a metal shield.  You can buy them because I bought replacements via advice from here.  I also bought the hanger for the driver side of the car for the exhaust system if your putting in dual exhaust in a single exhaust car.   I'm sure someone will tell you the vendor because earlier this year there was a long thread on this.  I'm glad I purchased the items I mentioned and I'm looking forward to putting them on the car.

Hmm, I thought he meant the bracket that is installed from inside the trunk that holds the rear most hanger.  :clueless:

The company that sells the heat shields also sells the hangers.  I bought the heat shields from year one:

JS6061LHRH  heat shields ~ both sides
SR196 ~ heat shield bolt set

The passenger side exhaust hanger I can't remember where I got that piece.

Not after the metal heat shields, had one and bought the other to convert to dual exhaust.  It seems that the exhaust hanger itself has a layer of insulation between it and the boot floor.  Got some heat wrap today and will give that a try.  Obviously the factory thought that this was a high heat transfer location.

So I'm a complete gumby - the heat shield referred to in the manual were the metal heat shields above the mufflers.  Think first - post second :-[

No worries mate :) If all your misreads are as easy to recover from as this, you'll be done in no time

Are the heat shields above the mufflers there because the gas tank is right there?
