I've thought about that approach, but I don't think it will accomplish what I want. I've spent some time just staring at my grille and header (and there's a sign that I probably need a life), and the conclusion I've come to is that there are two problems with the design. The first is that the sad mouth grille looks ... well, sad. There may not be much I can do about this unless I choose to go cutting my header, although I'm toying with cutting off the bottom corners of the sad mouth to make the grille shape more of an oval than a trapezoid, and probably mounting some sheet metal there painted body color to make it seem like part of the header. I've also thought about reversing the trapezoid shape so that it's wider at the top.
The other issue, though, is that there's little depth to the design. The 70 grille goes deeply in from the headlight area, and the 71 still has a good view of what's behind the bars, plus the angle of the bars, but the 72-74 is mostly flat and even with the header panel. At the very least I'm going to fab something in the shape of the sad mouth, probably by making and mounting new horizontal plates and replacing the old ones, that has more pronounced depth. I'm not sure what that shape will be. I've thought about tilting it forward, tilting it backward, and even somewhat mimicing the shape of the 71 Javelin grille that I used to have. So far I haven't hit upon any design where I've said "That's it!" but I'll know it when I do.
