Looks like better eye protection might be in order. I bought a prescription set of swim goggles that have rubber seals that seal you eyes off completely. I did that after the first time I got metal in my eye years ago, and it has never happened since. You can also use a swim mask if you wear glasses. Don't laugh, it works. :iagree: I use old school safety glasses with the mesh side shields. I've never had anything get in my eyes while wearing them (20+ years). They are way unattractive, but comfortable. Most of the newer designs sit too far from your face to do any good, but they look cool. :dunno:

I got some awsome goggles with a nice rubber seal to sit over my glasses. I had some other goggles before that just sucked. My saftey glasses have wrap around sides, an upper shield and a bottom lip.

I think I might have rubbed the metal or actually flushed it into my eye upon cleaning. Aw, who knows, point is, I can't let it happen again. I am too valuable to my family and work to loose an eye.

I have actually torn through gloves with sheetmetal before, so saftey equipment is just a first layer of protection, it never will completely prevent you from injuring yourself.

One thing to think about is dual eye protection. A nice set of proper safety glasses plus a shield sure do a fantastic job of protecting the eyes. Even safety glasses/goggles are a good idea. I would not use anything without impact resistant lenses, the last thing someone needs is an object hitting the lens at a high rate of speed and sending a whole flock of glass shards into the eye  :scared:

Only took 2 trips to the emergency room to finish my project.  Once for 9 stitches in my right forearm as I didn't notice the razor sharp chunk of metal right next to the welder....as I was reaching for the welder.....yah.  Went puuurrrtyy deep.  Second was a chunk of metal in the left eye, was wearing safety glasses but it musta gone around the lenses or SOMETHING, but was a little bit of metal grinding that flew in at high velocity, didn't really feel it for like half the day until it finally got so painful I went to the emergency room at 11pm.  Most the rest were just cuts scrapes, few jabs, lots of bruises etc etc.  All for the love of the project

Abraham Lincoln, being rather tall, was once asked how long he thought a persons legs should be, and he replied just long enough to touch the ground.

So, I would say as many as it takes to get the job done.   ;D

I went in on Friday to have a follow up appt. with an Opthamologist. He saw  that I had a huge "rust Ring" and a remaining piece of metal. He then told me that he would take care of that for me.

Then he pulls out this eye burnishing tool  :o- essentially a dremel with a micro-abrasive. They put the numbing drops in the eye, then they proceed to  burnish out the rust ring and associated foreign objects.

Suddenly, I felt like the project.... :lol2:

I had it done to the other eye today. Damn. Goggles, shield, mask, hat, protective barrier, riot shield.....Check...

Holy crap, dremels and eyes just don't seem to go together to me.   :22yikes: My ophthalmologist just used a pair of jewlers tweezers to remove the metal.

Yeah, The tweezers and what not did not apply. I had a large enought rust ring to call for the special mellon baller.... :o ;D

I have had that before. Ouf course, I am more accident prone than the rest.

i think my eyes have magnetic because it seems metal keeps going into them no matter what I try. 4 or 5 times in a year.

I had the chiesel cut to the left hand and metal in the eye with a rust halo that they dug out since it wasn't that deep.

I seem to get something in my eye once a year  :banghead:

Haven't had any eye accidents. However my first week in stripping my car down, i broke a knuckle on  my right hand when my wrench broke loose. Ow!
That was 8 weeks ago and i am still nursing it. Those things just don't seem to get better very fast.

I worked in a machine shop years ago and got metal dust and shavings in both eyes, while wearing safety glasses and goggles, which required an emergency room visit. They had to flush my eyes with saline solution and then pick out the big pieces with a metal pick. On top of that I had to use acid drops in my eyes for 2 weeks.  My eyes were so red and sore it looked like I was stoned 24 hours a day and wearing sunglasses at night.
