Painted dash pad
« on: October 25, 2007 - 12:15:55 AM »
I am doing this to keep my VIN tag in place. If it ends up looking stupid i will just buy a pad. I thought i would try this first. I would like opinions?? Keep in mind i have a ton of work to do yet, and it will be a lot smoother than this pic, with the A/C vents smooth also, and metal wire mesh tacked up to the underside of the defrost vents.

From you other post I think you are reading to much into the vintag removal.... But to answer you question I think it willbe interesting to see how it comes out. I think it will be neat to see one that has been smoothed out slightly to cover some of the nasty parts of the frame.

JS23 - I cannot for sure tell are you painting the metal under pad or painting the vinyl pad. If you are doing the latter, try and find one of those mobile guys that restore nicks and scratches for the dealers to make newish cars look new again. In Calgary we have a fellow that does that for his day job and restores dash pads and upholstery panels at night for people like us. He fills the cracks with some glue stuff and somehow bonds over the top with matching grain stuff. Not sure here but the finished product tells the truth. He charged me $300CDN to restore my original dashpad (that looked like an abortion at the start) that now looks like it came from the factory yesterday. He also used some coloring dye that is semi-glossy like the original. All in all a perfect job and I know the pad fits right.

have you considered preping the dash and having a bedliner sprayed on it?

the soft rubber style not the hard sandpaper type.
