Exhaust resonator
« on: November 14, 2007 - 04:30:01 PM »
I'm installing new exhaust system on my 70 Cuda 440 pack.
The resonator on the passenger side seems to be about 1/2 inch away from the bottom of the floor pan.Because of the heat from the exhaust does that look correct? You would think that the resonator would be a bit lower

Yeah, that does look a little close for comfort.  How far is the driver's resonator from the floorboard?  :clueless:

About the same. The brackets are correct, and the hangers are also correct.  The resonators are right under the brackets the way they are suppose to be.

trouble, I looked at the Accurate Exhaust website and the only difference I could find was that their illustration has the brackets attaching to the tailpipe instead of attaching to the resonator. Reality is what's on the car you're dealing with though, i'm just saying is all :dunno:

Even though they show that, the tail pipe goes into the resonator.

as long as it cannot move up & hit the floor & you have air space you will be ok

I agree , I have BIG 50 series Flowmasters on my Cuda and they are close to the floor probably 1/2". I don't have any problems with them hitting the floor, but I welded all the pipes & mufflers so they don't move.
You will be Ok.....

Vinny,I'm almost finished with the exhaust system.
I had to make a few adjustments.I had to cut 1nch off the end of the head pipe so the resonator would line up with the bracket. Also the head pipe was just about touching the torsion bar, so I marked it and pulled it down and hit it a few times.

Its a catch "22", mufflers and resonators need to have good ground clearance.  :2thumbs:
However yours seem too close to the floor and they look like they can be lowered a little.
I have seen several fires caused by the heat generated through the floor, catching the carpet and also under the rear seat on fire.   :22yikes:   :22yikes:
If it is for cruising I would think about a heat shield above if possible.   :working:

I have a question about the resonator. One resonator has an A and B for the direction, the other resonator is blank. When I asked tom at Accurate about the direction of the resonator, he told me it can go on either way.Does that sound right to you guys?

Yes resonators can go on either way.
However have a look inside the hole and see if the holes inside have a raised lips, if so you will need to put both resonators on the same way, it changes the resonance or tone of the exhaust.   :2thumbs:

I'm not going to be able to do that because I have the drivers side completed, bolted down and I really don't want to drop it down again.
