Telescopic antenna option
« on: November 25, 2007 - 09:39:00 PM »
I have seen on some Mopars (but not many) an antenna that goes out really far out like 5 feet up.
I might be mistaken but weren't they available as an option on E bodies for 70-71? Anyone have one on their car? These must be rare if they are really an option for Mopars.

Anyone with a pic of one extended?

Yes they were on E bodies. I never see anybody with theirs fully extended cause they look much too tall.

I do believe if you had an AM radio, you got the telescopic antenna, if you had an AM-FM, you got the shorter fixed length. The longer antenna would work better for AM, the shorter for FM, and it's cheaper too.

That would make sense. Thanks for the info.

I am pretty sure mine came with the AM radio, but I had the short antenna.  I guess someone could have replaced it at some point.   :dunno:

I guess that the longer antenna's probably got broken off, I know that the longer ones I had back in the late '60's got shortened going under low branches etc.   :hyper:

I gave up after 2 or 3 from memory. I went to electric antenna's and broke a few of them also, not quick enough when going off road.  :money:    :hyper:

Might not be true on e-bodies, but it's what i've always understood on the earlier B bodies (68-9). At some point, they may have eliminated the telescopic antenna to save $$.

AM radio (560-1600 KHZ) has a much longer wavelength than FM (86.7-106 MHZ), so the longer antenna is not needed for optimum FM reception.

It was not an option, it was the only antenna available on E-Bodies in 1970.

Here is a photo of one all the way up.

I wanted to show this because I don't believe any other car maker made a taller antenna than Mopar on their passenger cars.

A story to go along the lines of this:

When I was younger I used to drive to the top of the mountain look out above the valley at night. 2,000 elevation apprx. With a dial radio, I would try to catch a "skip" station. That is when a radio station bounces off and skips. I would pick up stations up far away as from Los Angeles which was 500+ miles away from me. It wouldn't happen very often, but turning the station knob ever so slightly I could catch these skip stations from great distances.

Speaking of skip, my dad said that when he was younger, he and his brother in law went up on our silo with the cb, and talked to people on skip from Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, etc.  Said it was just crazy.
