Simple re-ring gone wrong?
« on: November 25, 2007 - 06:45:19 PM »
The '69 383 in my '70 chall. was rebiult before I got it 18yrs ago and have been noticing a power loss. I supected valves seats ( alot of hi speed cruizing :naughty:) and might've fallen prey to mags and pre bought RPM heads last tax return
Sure enough apon pulling heads found some burnt/sunken valves and light cyl scoring. The local fix-all machine shop said the rings were worn out also but cyl cleaned up with a light hone. Also had crank polished and block surfaced. When I went to reasmble it the crank felt tight and sure enough now had less than .001 thou! Had machine shop make a house call confirmed it was the the crank not the bearing shells, so he took it back and touched up the mains on the alighn borer. All this took the entire summer season!
my questions are:- does the crank clearence problem sound legit or should I send it on a 3000 mile round trip to someone else?
-should I send out my eddy RPM heads regardless/also to be checked/touched up?
-CP sir...would you be willing or able to this winter? time permiting ofcourse. :clueless:

I dunno why the main bores would of moved?  Perhaps it was always this way.  Have you put the crank in and Plastigaged yet?  When I got my Eddy heads it was highly recommended to take them apart, clean them, check the valve job, valve to guide clearance, gasket match and reassemble.  Alot of guys don't though and I haven't heard of any horror stories on this board.

SO where are you at now ?
is the crank clearanced properly or is it still tight , as I recall the brgs are available in .002 oversize as well as .010 undersize so possibly you could just use different brgs ,, you need to have .002 clearance minimum  all the way around on all brgs to survive
as for the heads I guess you need new seats installed
what do you want me to help you with ?

Polished cranks dont get tighter... Something's wrong. Main bores dont move either... Are you certain you had the caps in the proper places and facing the right way? They are numbered for a reason. If the crank was polished, and you used the same sized bearings, the clearance would always be larger, unless there was either somethign between the shells and teh block, or the caps were backwards or on the wrong saddles.

In my experience, main caps rearragned or on wrong will lock the crank down every time. The only exception I ever saw was a Mercedes engine I rebuilt. It was a 6 cyl Mercedes diesel and no mater how you put the main caps on, the crank would spin fine.

Were all your mains tight with .001"? I could see maybe one or two but if they were all out to lunch like that I would have guessed bad bearing set. But if you guys already mic'd the main journals maybe their crank grinder was having a bad day. How about the rods?

Thanks for all the replys everyone...I didn't get a chance to recheck crank clearence before freeze up (no heat in shop) :screwy: and come to think of it I never did check the rod journals! :banghead: The main and rod journals were turned .010 years ago and only polished this time. and ya I got the caps mixed up :grinyes:(was following mrs mopars #,not the tiny dots :eek7:) The guy from the shop then measured the crank bores, journals and brg. shells and agreed that there was a little under 1 thou left. It just strange to me and wanted a second opinion I guess.
As far as heads go I already bought the RPM's earlier and want to use them to get some more weight off the front end...was just looking for a place to send them and have them checked out etc.
