Can a bolt on shifter handle fit on a slide in shifter mechanism? Do I have to drill out the shifter so the handle will stay put?

I do this a lot , you need to narrow the base of the handle & then I drill through the dimple in the shifter mech & thread 1 side of the body & insert a 3/8" bolt through the shifter body & handle to retain it
