How many quarts of fluid needed during filter change on 904?
« on: December 28, 2007 - 05:23:48 PM »
Hi again, I have a pretty simple and random question.  Does anybody know how many quarts of ATF are needed during a filter change on a 904 trans?  I have a Lokar trans dipstick and I want to make sure the dipstick is accurate, seeing as my engine oil one was about 1.5 quarts overfilled when it read normal.   :eek4: Thanks! -Dan

Kind of hard to say as far as that goes. Transmissions can easily drain a quart or so extra depending on how long you let it sit with the pan off. Tactrans may have a better answer, just my 2cents!

Dan,when you drop the pan on a 727 or 904,it usually takes about 4 Qts to fill it up. To test for accuracy, with the transmission in neutral, idling on a level surface, if you did not have a filler tube in the case , the fluid would be right at the top of the filler tube hole.

Good deal, I'll have to check it that way then.  I'm worried that this dipstick maybe inaccurate too, and I'm sure the trans overfilled 1 quart would probably suffer quite a bit more than the engine from aerated fluid.  Thanks!
