Dave and Wally, sorry if I came off as rude.  It's just that buildsheets are sacred to me, they are the one item that guarantees a car is what it claims to be.  My resto Cuda will sport a repop door tag and repop fender tag, I have the originals but they are in far too poor condition to leave on the car.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with repoping these, I just think that messing with the sheet is going too far, if it's gone it's gone, let it be...IMHO of course.

if the build sheet is gone its gone, no way can you say you can document a car to that level.

Ted.......If you had a 70 v-code e-body that didn't have a fender tag or build sheet, because someone discarded it and the enigine and trans, axle were correct, and you could clearly see what option the car had and now you wanted to document the car and do a full restoration on it what would you do as a purist.  now why would this be fraudulent.  just like a reproduction seat skins or quarter panel, it wasn't made then but now, but it is putting the back together that counts. how is that fraud.

The way i look at it is there are many purists in the automotive world, some have to have it buy the books or numbers, some just want a really nice car to build there way with factory options, and there are some that do not care about being by the number and will do what they want. Just because one person has a numbers match fully documented car and is a purist in that right , doesn't mean everyone has to follow that line or is fraudulent.

this is all good conversation, about what to do or not to do. Again the simplicity of passing information.

I still say and know that just because you have the build sheet does not mean that the car was built that way at all.  Things were changed on the assembly line everyday when these cars were produced.  They were built with parts available at the time of build.  Parts were not always on hand and if you knew someone the car could be assembled different anyway.  I was there at dealerships and have seen this in practice.  I have seen engines that were put together wrong with different sizes of bearings.  The engines were green.   I am not trying to start an argument or anything but I know what I have seen.  Just wish I would have taken pictures and kept the documentation from these vehicles.  I know I can not prove this but I know what I have seen.

I didn't see Ted's post as being rude.  I hope the same thing.  If you find a source for reproduction build sheets, so will the people with a 318 3-speed barracuda that suddenly have a bona fide Hemi 4-speed triple black, gator grain, 8-track recorder, power window, Cuda.  Even if you know it's a reproduction and would never sell the car as original, what about the guy who gets it 3 owners after you ?  I have a folder full of blank build sheets I printed out that I'm going to fill in for my 73 Plymouth Coyote, but there's no way even a novice would mistake it for a real one.  Or my 74 440-6 R/T Challenger,  think anyone would believe it's a 1 of 1 ?

Oh well,

Well no matter what you make out there the vin doesnt lie it shows what engine came in the car and if it was a cuda or barracuda so people are going to be decieving i am sure but you can argue with the vin number.

I would agree to an extent.  The vin may show the engine that was suppose to come in it,  But may not show the engine combination that really cam with it or even the body that came with it.

I did not take his comment as being rude. When someone asks where to get reproduction data tags, vin stickers AND build sheet duplicates it kinda throws up a red flag IMO. Not that the guy meant to promote fraud but like others have said, you cannot have everything. My car is not real rare by Challenger standards and the previous owner did an extensive paint job that had everything in the interior taken out. No matter how hard I tried I did not find a build sheet and although I would love to find one, that ship has sailed. Yes I have the data tag but I feel the same as the guy who stated it could not be filled out properly. What tires came with my car? Rallye wheels or steel and hubcaps? Just too many variables that cannot be accounted for once the original build sheets are gone.

I agree with that but the build sheet might not be correct either.  Not trying to be rude just trying to get the correct info out there.  Take if from me things were changed from what the build sheet says.  It would be closer than just having the fender tag.

Oh yeah I agree totally that a car is not always exactly as the build sheet indicates. I am just talking about the fact that you really start getting into a gray, fuzzy area when duplicating build sheets. Whether they are correct per the original or not I would not put much credibility at all if I were to see a rare car with a duplicated build sheet sitting with it. I do see why people would want to have copies of the original on hand, people who are scum take data tags and steal build sheets but I just do not see a reason for the build sheet to be duplicated.

I agree unless you could get the original build sheet somewhere and it was exactly as it was from chrysler.  I agree that it is a good starting point to have some idea as to where to start.
