Build Cost or Cost to Build
« on: December 28, 2007 - 05:38:22 PM »
This has been playing with my mind lately so here it is! Everything is new on my car especially motor wise! and all has less than 500 miles on it! And I have receipts for all of it!

I have noticed lately a lot of my parts purchased has went up in cost.... example my msd pro billet distributor has went up $60 since I bought mine...

I keep a total of every single nut and bolt that has went into my car!

What it cost me to build my car would cost a good bit more to build now!!! follow me!!!

So lets say you sell your car and having receipts for everything matters in the sale... yea I have receipts for everything and it cost me this much to build but it would cost you this much to build it now!!!

So in reality your car should be worth more money!!! I think it should be!!!

I really didnt price every single part and it may only cost appx. 1500ish more to build but do ya understand what im getting at???

Now granted muscle cars hold their prices etc... etc...

I agree on current value.

Be forewarned that their arguement might center around the depreciation of the value of the parts, because they are now "used" and most parts gets worse with age.

If i was selling I would have my receipts but make the arguement that it would cost 1500 more to build it now...and value it at that.

I think it's pretty rare that you can actually get every penny back that you put into a car, unless it is a very rare or original Hemi car.  A lot of times I see listings where they say they've got something like $80,000 into it, but might only get $50,000 for the car.  Now I'm sure the $80,000 would be a bit of a stretch, but it probably is more than what the car sells for.

You are correct about parts going up all the time. I can tell you I restored my 71 Challenger RT in 1992 and it was in about the same condition as my 70 Cuda when I got it in 2000. It cost me around $10,000 to restore my Challenger with all work being done in a 2 car garage. My 70 Cuda was restored in my 2 car garage and I have a little over $20,000 in it. Some parts had gone up 3-4 times what they were for the Challenger. When I bought my NOS headlight bezels for my Challenger they cost $35.00 each. My reproduction ones on my Cuda were $125.00 each. Another example is the exhaust system. My complete stock exhaust system on my challenger with tips cost $400.00 and on the Cuda it was $725.00. You maybe able to use it as a selling tool but will never be able to get much more money just because parts went up so much.
