Speedometer gear change -- Anything to watch out for?
« on: December 30, 2007 - 02:17:34 PM »

Hi guys,

My Barracuda should be back from the shop tomorrow with a fresh new 3.55 suregrip and balanced driveshaft.  I have a new speedometer gear and o-ring/gasket set ready to go for when I get it back.

Anything I should watch out for when I go to replace the gear?  I figured it was just a matter of disassemble, swap, and put back together.  But the guys at the shop doing the rear end started to list all sorts of reasons that it could start reasons I could end up creating a leak.

Anybody do the swap, then end up wishing they'd done something different?

Cheers,
Covert

Pretty simple swap.  Just make sure you index the speedo gear housing for the number of teeth on the gear.  Be patient when reinstalling it and don't just force it in so you don't nick or tear the o ring.

:iagree: I have done a few of them. Getting the gear out can sometimes be a little tough. Just keep pulling at it. It will come out. Be ready for a bath of trans fluid if you have not drained the trans.

Yep,

Have a pan under it, as you will lose a quart or so of stinky tranny fluid. The big thing I had to learn was to index the housing for the tranny gear to my new tranny gear. There are 3 sets of tranny gear ranges on the housing, just make sure the range you are in is at the bottom.

Cool.

I'll definitely watch to make sure I index it correctly.

BTW, for anyone else watching this thread -- I got the gear from YearOne, and they said that they hadn't got any new gears since April of this year, and that something was going on with the production from Chrysler.

They didn't have the gear I originally wanted at all, nor any of the gears one size smaller.  They did have 6 left of the gears one size bigger than what I wanted, so I jumped at it.  Don't know if every supplier is in the same boat.

If your's is off, I think I might have a few gears between the 26-32 tooth range.

Thanks Mike.

If the gear I have is too far off, I'll email you.
