I am thinking about putting some compound on my pulley belts and starting the motor and holding my valve covers on them to get a show room shine

Go to Eastwood and buy a polishing kit. You need to do them in steps with each step getting finer in the polishing grit compound. Those kits (includes compound and buffs) dont cost more than 70-80 bucks, and a kit can do at least 2-3 sets of e-body trim easy. It's time consuming to do it correctly, but you can polish aluminum to a mirror finish if you have the patience. Once you are satisified, you'll need to protect the finish with a clear coating (eastwood also sells that) since aluminium will oxidize over time and lose it's luster.

Stroker Beware. :stomp:
When you polish the covers, make sure you keep moving them around.  If you sit in one spot too long polishing you will heat buckle the covers. :2thumbs:

Oh yeah, wear a mask and of course the face shield. The dust and hair fibers are nasty to breathe in.
I used to hang out with some guys that worked in a polishing shop for harley stuff to get polished. They came out of the shop everyday looking pretty bad.
