I do believe the 489 is the better case, and with gears and sure grip already in, $400 is a real good price.  The problem is, what case is currently in your car?  If it is not a 489, then I believe you will need a different drive shaft yoke, and possibly some other stuff.  I'm just not sure how interchangeable they are.

I like the 742 carrier better , it doesn`t have a crush sleeve to fail , as mentioned you will neeed to be aware of the yols size the there are 2 different U joints used , the 7260 which is 2 1/8" inside the ears or the 7290 which is 2 5/8 across inside the ears , all carriers will swap , the axle spline etc is the same

I decided to pass on the posi, but if I do get another case can't I just change to a bigger yoke and change the driveshaft? I currently have a 741 case. I spoke to a friend of mine and he says he has over a dozen cone style rearends and doesn't like them. He does have 2 clutch style rearends. The one I am looking at is a 742 case with 3.70 gears and it is completely rebuilt. He said $750 for it. I will have to save up my pennies because he is holding it for me for a month.
10 years in the making......

that si the problem , changing Yolks on a 489 can distroy the crush sleeve & or the gears if not done correctly , there is a conversion joint available from Precision though
